Deadline is this week for farmers to apply for disaster aid

The deadline is this week for Western North Carolina farmers affected by flooding last year to apply for disaster aid.

Farmers in Henderson, Transylvania, Buncombe, Haywood and Rutherford counties have until Wednesday to sign up for the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Agricultural Disaster Program.

The funding is a result of Senate Bill 268 filed by Sen. Chuck Edwards in March.

Nearly $10 million in funds are available between the five counties.

The program will directly assist farmers who suffered losses to commodities, livestock, poultry and aquaculture due to the excessive rain and flooding that occurred between May 15, 2018 and Dec. 31, 2018.
