Senator Edwards Named to Senate Standing Committees

RALEIGH, N.C. - Senator Edwards (R-Henderson) has been appointed to 7 Senate standing committees for the 2019-2020 legislative biennium.

Senator Edwards will serve on the following committees:
-Commerce and Insurance, Co-Chair
-Appropriations on Agriculture, Natural and Economic Resources, Co-Chair
-Agriculture/Environment/Natural Resources
-Appropriations on Education/Higher Education
-Education/Higher Education
-Rules and Operation of the Senate

"I am excited for the opportunity to represent District 48 in committees that are so vital to our area," Edwards said. "I am proud that the work I have done over the last session has led to these committee chairmanships. I am excited to delve into each of these committees and topics."


District 48 Agriculture and Commerce

20% of Henderson County's economic output comes from Agribusiness. There are 557 farms in Henderson County, totaling to almost 38,000 acres of land. Henderson and Buncombe counties rank in the Top 5 of counties in cash receipts for "all other crops" according to the NC Department of Agriculture.
Commerce is also vital to District 48. Buncombe, Henderson and Transylvania all see starting visitor numbers with revenues continually growing by millions per year. Henderson County saw a revenue growth of $12 million in 2017. More than 20,000 jobs in Buncombe County are support by travel and tourism. Transylvania County visitors spent almost $95 million in 2016, a 6% growth from 2015.
