BREVARD, N.C. (WLOS) — Transylvania County commissioners voted Monday night to support changing the county’s federal opportunity zone. The zones were created in 2017 to attract economic growth to low-income areas. When Transylvania County’s zone was created, more than 65 percent of it was Pisgah National Forest, which cannot be developed.
With the help of Sen. Chuck Edwards, the zone could be expanded to include the entire old Ecusta mill site, which could attract a variety of businesses.
The change would have to be approved by Congress.
