Local farmers and state legislators were honored during an annual gathering of apple growers Wednesday at Blue Ridge Community College.
N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, N.C. Sen. Chuck Edwards and N.C. Rep. Chuck McGrady were each named as a Friend of the Apple Grower for their efforts in securing $8.55 million in state disaster relief for Western North Carolina farmers who suffered crop losses to heavy rainfall and flooding in 2018.
Approximately $5.9 million of that funding went to 106 farmers in Henderson County.
“I’m really proud of the fact those checks got out as quickly as they did,” McGrady said. “I’m not surprised at all that the largest percentage was allocated to Henderson County and apple growers. I thank you for what you do and am glad to have been a part of this.”
