What Are They Hiding?

Gov. Cooper violating law by withholding public records

WNCN, WRAL have been waiting for records since spring on Cooper's unemployment office mismanagement

Sen. Edwards: "Cooper is making a mockery of the free press."

RALEIGH, N.C. – WNCN, Charlotte's NBC affiliate, reported that yesterday "marks five months since WCNC Charlotte first requested public records related to the change in leadership within [the Division of Employment Security]."

WRAL, Raleigh's NBC affiliate, requested the same records in April but reported last week that "the Cooper administration has not provided any of those records, despite repeated reminders over six months."

What is Gov. Roy Cooper hiding?

Similarly, Attorney General Josh Stein has refused to turn over public records surrounding his secret mid-election negotiations with Democratic lawyers to change the rules of his own election, and yesterday his office reported that it will continue withholding responsive documents until after Election Day.

What is Josh Stein hiding?

Sen. Chuck Edwards (R-Henderson), who co-chairs the Joint Oversight Committee on Unemployment Insurance, said, "Gov. Cooper is making a mockery of the free press by brazenly violating state transparency laws. And guess who we have as our state's top law enforcement officer? An attorney general who refuses to comply with state law himself by withholding documents surrounding his secret negotiations to rewrite the rules of his own election after voting began."
